Planned Giving Options

Planned Giving
The Arc of Monroe County relies on all size and manner of gifts to insure and enhance the quality of life for future generations of individuals with developmental disabilities. The planned giving program enables donors to make substantial gifts to the Foundation through a comprehensive program of tax-wise giving alternatives.

Outright Contributions
The easiest way to support The Arc of Monroe County is to make a contribution in the form of cash, securities, or real estate. Gifts of appreciated property, such as stock or real estate, can provide donors with savings on capital gains taxes as well as a charitable tax deduction.

Bequests
A simple bequest in your will or living trust is the easiest way to make a planned gift.  Your bequest can be a specific dollar amount, a percentage of your estate, or a residual portion of your estate.

Retirement Assets
If you name someone other than your spouse as the beneficiary of your retirement plan assets, income and estate taxes may leave them with only 25 cents on the dollar. A traditional retirement plan, such as a 401(k) or 403(b), is one of the best assets to leave to a charity because it escapes income and estate taxes. If you decide to include The Arc of Monroe County as a beneficiary of a qualified retirement plan, you may still include other beneficiaries. Contact the plan manager to change your beneficiaries.

Stocks
You may not be aware of a potentially large tax benefit when giving stock as a charitable gift to a 501© (3) not-for-profit organization. Say you purchased stock for $1.00 and it is now worth $10.00.  When you cash in that stock, you pay a capital gains tax.  If you donated that stock to The Arc of Monroe County, The Arc of Monroe County would receive the full $10.00 tax free, and the donor is exempt from any capital gains tax. Contact your stock advisor to make The Arc of Monroe County the recipient of your gift of stocks.

Life Insurance
Naming The Arc of Monroe County as the beneficiary of an existing life insurance policy is a simple way to remember The Arc of Monroe County in your planned giving. You may also directly donate the policy to The Arc of Monroe County. Another option is to take out a new policy and name The Arc of Monroe County as owner and beneficiary.  Premium payments for certain policies may be tax deductible.  Please check with your tax advisor.

Charitable Trust
Charitable trusts enable donors to irrevocably set money aside, or property in a trust, for a number of specified years or for life.  Remainder trusts provide a steady stream of income for life to the named beneficiary. For capital gains and tax deductible benefits associated with charitable trusts, please consult with an attorney and/or tax advisor.
