Ryan Rolls With Changes
Friday, May 04, 2012 (39 reads)

Carol Brakenbury knew her son Ryan was going to be in good hands in his new Arc day program when they first visited the program many years ago. One of the first persons they met was staff person Stephanie Spring, who had played goalie for Coach Carol’s high school girl’s soccer team.

“It was quite a surprise to see her and very comforting,” said Carol. “Stephanie made his move from Ballantyne an easy transition. The two of them became good buddies and still are today.” Today, Ryan attends East Henrietta Road day program, where Stephanie is now the manager.

Kelvin's Contentment

Maurice Ransom knows Kelvin Wu is happy at Ballantyne day program because Kelvin gives him a high-five every time he sees him.

Maurice started the ritual shortly after he joined the Arc last fall and gets a kick out of it. “We spend a lot of time together. Kelvin is quiet, but he’s a good guy.”

Kelvin’s father, George, agrees that Kelvin is content these days. “He does very well at Ballantyne. He’s happy and likes his routine. He has many friends. I’m very happy with the Arc. I like the way they handle him and how nice everyone is. I’d be very happy if this routine continued for his future and he would be too.”

Family Matters

In an era when many families followed doctor’s orders by placing their family member with developmental disabilities in an institution, Albert Bradwell’s extended family did the opposite. They embraced him, raising him in a caring, loving and supportive environment.

Albert was born in 1949. His father died shortly afterward and his mother was unable to raise him because of her own disabilities. His Aunt Millie then stepped in, raising Albert until he moved into an Arc home in the 1990’s. But she and the rest of the Kreck family…aunts, uncles and cousins…did not consider their commitment to Albert to be the least bit extraordinary.
