Selfless Dedication

Warren and Joyce Heilbronner have given to the Arc Foundation of Monroe dozens of times of times since Warren first became involved as a volunteer back in the 1970’s. But it wasn’t until his granddaughter Sarah was born in 1991 that his involvement took on new meaning.

“Sarah was born with severe brain damage,” Warren said. “I went from being a legal outsider to an involved grandparent. It gave me a more focused perspective, especially in my area of planning for family members who have a loved one with a developmental disability. It made me change and update my own plans.” Sadly, Sarah passed away at age 14.

Serving The Arc and America

When he’s not busy with his full-time job planning menus, training staff and ensuring healthy eating habits in Arc homes, Chris Flores might be found on a Navy ship, in a foreign country or at the graveside service of a veteran or in the Middle East.

Chris, age 30, bleeds red, white and blue. As a Chief Petty Officer in the Naval Reserves, he spends up to 20 hours each week in service to his country (and up to an additional six weeks each year supporting the Navy). It’s enough to make a couch potato turn another shade of red. But there’s more.

They have so little, yet they have everything.  Their sparsely furnished apartment is tucked away in a corner of Rochester’s South Wedge.  They have no car.  Dad is 70 and lost his business.  One of their children is being held hostage in another country, and the others still live in Iraq.  Another son, Majdi, has developmental disabilities.  They don’t speak English.

But the smiles on the faces of Majdi and his parents, Ahmed and Rabab Ashour, melt all language barriers.  They are in America and life is good...and so is the Arc of Monroe.
