End the "R" Word Campaign
“End the R-Word” Campaign
and the Importance
of UsingRespectful Language

The Arc of Monroe is sponsoring an awareness campaign known as
“End the R-Word” to heighten the level of awareness of the harmful effects of the word “retard(ed)”. The campaign’s mission is to educate the community on the importance of using “People-First” language.

A person’s level of acceptance within their community is largely based on the language used to identify them within their social circles. Therefore, it is extremely important that respectful language or “People-First Language” be used. “People-First” language does not stereotype or label individuals based on their personal characteristics.

Individuals with developmental disabilities prefer to be referred to as: A person, people, individual, employee, or by calling the person by his or her own name. They prefer to be identified by the roles they have in life such as employee, friend, aunt, uncle, sister or brother, and NOT defined by their disability. People with developmental disabilities, are just that…….people. Period.

Self-advocates believe that labels create negative stigmas and perceptions and therefore believe that labels should not be used. They agree that words have power and that the “R-word” is hurtful to others. Therefore, it is important to choose your words carefully.

Remember to use words that build self-confidence and do not exclude. We ask that you take it upon yourself to use “People-First” language and set an example that using the “r-word” is not acceptable.  Together, we hope to create an awareness campaign that supports respecting diversity in others. It is important to remember individuals with developmental disabilities ARE PEOPLE FIRST, and NOT their disability.
